TYYZ and its lighting division Lumolar were initiated 2005 and officially founded in 2008 in Toronto. The firm is a partnership of Catherine Hsueh Mei Lin and Mark Tholen. We would like to thank the following contributors who have worked with us and enriched our projects with their expertise and passion for good design: Jacob JeBailey, Parantap Bhatt, Eric Bury, Laura Carwardine, Mia Chung, David D'Andrea, Curtis Ho, Sarah Kaiser, Jaewon Kim, Jungyun Lee, Anna Leung, Greg Miller, John Nunn, Sarah Prodor, Rachel Sau, Brent Schmidt, Hamid Shahi, Samatha Tam, Richard Tseng, Jason Wong.
Our professional experience in the field of architecture and design spans from Asia and Europe to North America. Catherine Lin; B. Arch, MRAIC, OAA and Mark Tholen; BEDS, M. Arch, AK NW, MRAIC, BCIN have practiced in the field of architecture, architectural teaching, product and industrial design as well as event space design. Prior to setting up our own office we have worked on and designed significant large and small scale award winning projects with Behnisch und Partner, Richard Meier, Gottfried Böhm, Moriyama & Teshima and Diamond & Schmitt Architects.
We get our inspiration from anything. May it be a subtle revolutionary building, sophisticated machines, the chapel designed for a farmer without charging a commission, nature or good art. Design inspiration can occur anywhere, for example while salvaging a dashboard out of a car in a junkyard at the end of Truman Road in Kansas City. Found objects manipulated by time or chance often carry as much beauty as something envisioned and created on a blank canvas from new material.
